THE MOST EXPENSIVE WEAPONS IN THE WORLD

To identify the most expensive weapons in the world, Douglas A. McIntyre and Michael B. Sauter of the Web site 24/7WallSt reviewed figures from the Department of Defense budget and the Government Accountability Office. Their findings were posted January 9, 2012.

1. F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, built by Lockheed Martin and partners. DOD has budgeted for 2,457 of the aircraft. R&D: $58.4 billion. Price per plane: $109.5 million. Total price: $326.5 billion.

2. DDG 51 destroyer, produced by a group of contractors including Bath Iron Works, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman. About sixty have been in service since 1991; another fifteen are in the DOD budget. R&D: $1.3 billion. Price per destroyer: $1.3 billion. Total cost: $101.8 billion.

3. Virginia-class nuclear submarine, produced by General Dynamics Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding. Of the thirty in the DOD budget, eight are in operation. R&D: $7.2 billion. Price per unit: $2.6 billion. Total cost: $83.7 billion. (Note that the Center for Arms Control has estimated the price per unit at about $3 billon and the total program cost at about $90 billion.)

4. F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jet, built by Lockheed Martin/Boeing. DOD has 188 in its budget. R&D: $40.5 billion. Price per unit: $211.6 million. Total cost: $79.2 billion.

5. F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter aircraft, built by Boeing. DOD has 556 in its budget. R&D: $7.3 billion. Price per unit: $90.8 million. Total cost: $57.8 billion.

6. V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor transport plane, built by Boeing. DOD has 459 Ospreys in its budget. R&D: $13.6 billion. Price per unit: $95.2 million. Total cost: $57.8 billion.

7. Trident II ballistic missile, built by Lockheed Martin. DOD has 561 Tridents in its budget. R&D: $16.8 billion. Price per unit: $65.7 million. Total cost: $53.2 billion.

8. Joint Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle, built by different contractors. DOD has 26,552 units in its budget. R&D: $700 million. Price per unit: $1.6 million. Total cost: $41.6 billion.

9. CVN-78–class aircraft carrier, built by Northrop Grumman. The government has ordered three carriers for delivery over the next ten years. R&D: $4.6 billion. Price per unit: $9.78 billion. Total cost: $34 billion.

10. P-8A Poseidon surveillance and antisubmarine plane, built by Boeing. The military has ordered 122 of these planes. R&D: $8.2 billion. Price per plane: $206.5 million. Total cost: $33 billion.
